I'm finally getting back into the groove of just running after work almost every night. Which is awesome for me, but horrible for this blog since the only thing I really see after running is my living room ceiling.

I'm pretty sure I'm being punished for doing something bad. I do a lot of bad things, so I'm sure I deserve this punishment whatever it was for. But tonight Nicole watched the longest chick flick ever created. So I read a book in an attempt to protect my brain cells.

I took the gamble today that an appetizer portion would be enough food for lunch...and totally lost. As a result, I had to make the most ghetto salad ever out of the lettuce you aren't even supposed to eat, and every type of sauce on the table. It was surprisingly not as horrible as you might expect. As soon as I finished eating said salad, I immediately went and got ice cream to make up for it. Sorry, Pup. I'm not sharing even a lick.

Beating myself up running every night just so I can come home to this as quickly as possible might be the very definition of pointlessness.

There are a number of things that automatically immediately make my day better. You're looking at one of them.

Tonight after my run, I noticed a weird little brown thing on my tights (yes, I wear tights). I immediately smacked it, because that's just what you're supposed to do whenever you notice something atypical and you don't know what it is. It immediately exploded my own blood all over my hand. Totally gross. So here's a picture so you can be grossed out too.

Today I found out that Nike is getting rid of the little characters on their running site, and I'm a little bummed out about it. My guy looks exactly like me, and watching him always makes me happy after my runs. On a brighter note, my runs are finally starting to feel a little better again since having the plague.

I've posted on here about going to reptile shows before, but we still go to them pretty regularly. They remind Nicole and I of when she was a young boy and would go to these shows to look at scaly creatures with her mohawk.

Today was "We Like Asian People" day in Cleveland. It's a little disconcerting that this guy is pretty much the pinnacle of cool/famous Asian people in contemporary American popular culture. Since you probably don't recognize him, he's from a dancing crew that was on an MTV contest show...and lost.

We can still (kind of) say that Nicole (sort of) gets hit on by dudes (that she actually knows) at bars.

Since traveling, being sick, working overtime, and beating myself up in the 5k, today is the first day getting back to normal running in longer than I care to think about. I also went less miles than I care to admit, but I'm encourgaging myself for getting out at all.

I eat a lot. After coming to terms with this, I got myself a credit card that gives me extra points for my extra eating. These points can then turn into things like fancy shoes. Turning food into shoes is pretty much as miraculous to me as turning water into wine.

So I have a job. A real job that pays real money (most of the time). I do appreciate it and do my best not to take it for granted. However, if it's something fun, sometimes I do little side jobs for friends. Beyond just being fun and creative, these jobs are more creative with their payment too. Getting paid money is cool and all, but getting paid clothes and backpacks is a lot more exciting.

My mother recently learned to text. Given her prior history with technology, this is very funny to me. Now I get messages from her being naughy texting in church like a fourteen year old girl. Also funny was catching her texting in the parking lot before dinner tonight.

So a little over a year ago, I got it into my head that I wanted to run a 5k. I had never run one in my whole entire life. Really I hadn't really run much at all in my whole entire life, but I determined that it was something I needed to do. Most people start running for health or body shaping reasons, but not me. No, I was entirely motivated by the free t-shirt you get for completing the race. To this end, I searched out a race with the most interesting name and coolest shirt I could find. Obviously a glow-in-the-dark shirt named after insects was the holy grail of race shirts, and became the goal my running motivation...and we did it. And got the shirt. And Nicole won her age group after not having raced in ten years.
So that was a year ago. I've run a bunch of races since then, gotten a little faster, and have some how been lucky enough to win a number of prizes. I now have quite a collection of race shirts...but none of them offered quite as amazing of a shirt as the first glow-in-the-dark shirt of my dreams.
So it was pretty exciting to return to my first ever race this year. However, there were complications. A lot of really complicated complications really. See, every race I've run so far has been sequentially faster and faster. I always knew that this trend couldn't last forever, but in the back of my mind, I dreaded the day that I ran a slower race than my previous one. Well, going into tonight's race, I knew that it was bound to happen...and I'll list the reasons why.
1) I've been deathly sick and existing on a diet primarily comprised of cough drops and NyQuil for well over a week now.
2) Work has been crazy. I've been working a bunch of overtime, and even had to work today on the weekend.
3) Since I've been sick/working overtime, I haven't been running at all in the past eleven days. Really, I've only run two days of the past seventeen days.
4) My last race went pretty well (considering I was running though shin splints), and the time was realistically in the range of what I'm currently capable of.
5). This race is in the dark, illuminated by glowsticks like a rave, and on a mix of weird surfaces.
...So yeah, it happened. I ran almost two minutes slower than my last race and crossed the finish line feeling like a failure (regardless of the above listed considerations). I did manage to get this to soften the blow though. Yup, since Nicole was too sick to defend her first place age group prize from last year, I managed to win mine this year. I honestly have no idea how that happened considering I was too sick to get out of bed just a few days ago. To celebrate, we had popsicle and beer bathtime. So even my dreaded first non-PR race didn't end up so badly. I'm still getting over the shock.

If you haven't figured it out from the pictures of cough drops and thermometers, Nicole and I are both sick. What even I didn't know however, was that when Nicole is sick she obsesses about fancy French cookies.

Will someone please explain to Mushroom that a "mushroom steak wiz with" is just the name of the sandwich, and has nothing to do with ownership or who has rights to eating it.

Don't worry. These aren't really soft. Just "softish." And they aren't as big as you would think just looking at the packaging.

You can call it necessity or choice, but this is how we're living right now. Nicole perfers the Oriental ones. But you probably already knew that.
